Successful business starts with keyword research. It is one of the most important factors of successful internet marketing which many marketers simply can’t ignore. The knowledge gathered from keyword research will be applied to content creation to attract organic traffic from search engine.
Organic traffic is visitor send by the search engine to our blog or website and it is free. Everybody loves free traffic and that is why I have to optimize my website to attract such traffic. This is why keyword research is so important. I must know what the world is searching and my job is to match their request with relevant information.
When a word is type into the search engine, the word is what Internet Marketers termed as keyword. If the user typed in more than 2 words or more, it is called long tail keyword.
Long tail keyword is more useful than a single word keyword. If a user were to type guitar in the search engine, will you be able to know what the intention of the user? He or she can be searching for “guitar repair” or “guitar strings”. Therefore it is my job to know what the Internet users are searching with Keyword Research.
Since Google captures more than 80% of the Internet traffic and using the Keyword Research tool offered by them is a logical idea. Moreover it is free. Free is good for now but it does have limitations which I will share later.
To make this discussion easy, I shall use “guitar” as the keyword and proceed to fine tune or mine a list of keywords.
Open your browser and visit Keyword Research tool from Google. Before you proceed further, it is important to know the country of origin you are targeting. If you are selling physical goods in your country and are not prepared to do delivery outside, edit the tool to show results pertaining to your country. For this example, I will keep the default as United States.
Enter “guitar” into the tool and see what is being searched in the country. Click once on the heading “Approx Search Volume” to list the most search keyword at the top. Scroll lower to search for 2 or more words keyword which Internet Marketers called long tail keyword.
From the search result, look for long tail keyword that you can relate better and at the same time be mindful with the competition that lies ahead. Being more searched upon is an indication that money can be made here. If there is money to be made, stiff competition is to be expected.
For a start, I would suggest you skip keyword phrase that is searched more than 100k a month. Let’s start with something low and learn how to make money online is being done.
In this example, “left handed electric guitars” which was being searched 4,400 times might be a good candidate. Scroll back to the top of your search and replace “guitar” with “left handed electric guitars” and see what the related searched keywords are.
Henceforth I will not be too concern with the search volume. I will build a page each on “left handed electric acoustic guitars”, “used left handed electric guitars”, “left handed electric bass guitars”, “cheap left handed electric guitars” and a page for the various brands (Fender, Ovation, Ibanez) that offers left handed electric guitars.
I have covered the basics of keyword research and I hope you understand the decision process to ensure your online business success!
