Today when I switched on my computer in search for ideas on what to write, I saw my blog has finally broke a million mark in Alexa ranking! It is now 949,725 this morning! In case you are not an Internet Marketer like me, Alexa is best known as providing traffic information on a website.
The best possible ranking any website could probably achieve is 1. Newly created websites or blogs are given a ranking in millions. I am already fortunate that Make Money Mall was given an Alexa ranking of 8 million when I started because this was an expired domain name that I was lucky to have bought it.
Even then, I had already set to break the Alexa a million mark mentally. Everyday without fail, I will switch on my computer and check for any change in my Alexa ranking before I make any post. My heart will skip a beat whenever I see an improvement and sadden when it did not make a change like a small kid!
So is Alexa the true web traffic ranking tool? Sad to share with you, it is not. How Alexa track web traffic is by installing a spy ware on the user computer. Web traffic to a particular website is then compiled from data of all the computers on the Internet that have installed spy ware from Alexa.
Therefore if you have been visiting my blog and did not install spy ware from Alexa, your presence on my blog will not be included in the Alexa ranking data. The next problem with Alexa ranking, it can be manipulated. It was shared on the Internet that programmers were able to program a script to visit their own website periodically through-out the day on a computer installed with spy ware from Alexa!
Since there are so many short comings with Alexa ranking, why should I be bothered with it you may ask? If I am already getting so much traffic from Alexa installed computers, my web traffic data should be higher if I could include traffic from non Alexa installed computers yeah?
The next issue is with manipulation on Alexa ranking by programmers. First, I do not know how to program a script to spam my blog with hits. Second I do not have the intention to cheat myself for fake web traffic data!
It is very easy to check the Alexa ranking of your website. Simply visit Alexa and type in the URL of your website in the search box at the top of the page. Otherwise you might want to install Alexa toolbar on your favorite browser. Although Alexa is a spy ware, so long it is not malicious, I am happy to let them know my surfing behavior on the Internet.
